Also known as: AstaReal, AstaZine
The most powerful carotenoid antioxidant — 6000x stronger than vitamin C at quenching singlet oxygen. Protects mitochondria, skin, eyes, and cardiovascular system from oxidative damage.
Astaxanthin is a red-orange carotenoid pigment produced by the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. It is responsible for the pink color of salmon, shrimp, and flamingos. What makes it exceptional is its unique molecular structure that spans the entire cell membrane bilayer — protecting both the inner and outer surfaces simultaneously.
Most antioxidants work either inside or outside the cell membrane. Astaxanthin's molecular shape allows it to bridge the entire lipid bilayer — its polar end groups sit at both membrane surfaces while the polyene chain spans the interior. This provides complete membrane protection that no other antioxidant achieves.
Multiple RCTs show astaxanthin at 4-12mg/day:
It functions as an internal sunscreen — not replacing topical SPF, but providing supplemental photoprotection from inside.
Astaxanthin spans the cell membrane bilayer, quenching singlet oxygen and scavenging peroxyl radicals at both membrane surfaces. It inhibits NF-κB (anti-inflammatory), activates Nrf2 (endogenous antioxidant defense), reduces mitochondrial ROS at the electron transport chain, and inhibits LDL oxidation. It does NOT become a pro-oxidant at high concentrations (unlike beta-carotene).

Multiple RCTs for skin, eye health, and exercise recovery. Extensive safety data. FDA GRAS for food use. Well-established carotenoid.
Extremely safe. FDA GRAS. No significant adverse effects in clinical trials. May cause slight orange/pink skin tint at very high doses (harmless). Take with fat for absorption. Does not convert to vitamin A (no toxicity risk).
An mTOR inhibitor and FDA-approved immunosuppressant being investigated as the most promising pharmacological intervention for extending lifespan.
A direct NAD+ precursor that restores declining cellular energy metabolism and activates sirtuins for anti-aging effects.
The world's most prescribed diabetes drug, now being studied as a potential anti-aging intervention in the landmark TAME clinical trial.
